Beastie Boys - Ill Communication - CD Anno 1994 hatten sich die Beastie Boys bereits an ihre kulturelle Funktion als Trendsetter gewöhnt, und so kommt Ill Communication auch als Sammelalbum jener Dinge daher, die cool und hip waren: Live-Funk, etwas Hardcore, geniale Samples von obskuren Platten, Keyboards von Analog-Meister Money Mark, Gasteinlagen von Q-Tip und Biz Markie und die unvermeidbare Orgie geistreicher Old School-Rhymes. Trotz allem ist Ill Communication aber auch ein überraschend ausgereiftes Album einer Band, die damals immerhin schon zwölf Jahre auf dem Buckel hatte. Hier behaupten sich Jazz-Funk-Instrumentals im Rohzustand gegenüber Samples aus jenen Quellen, aus denen die Beastie Boys schon immer gern geschöpft hatten. Dezent bettete man den Gesang in diesen Mix ein und zeigte sich auch insgesamt gemäßigt: anstelle Beastie Boy´scher Widerborstigkeit steckte in den Texten plötzlich sogar etwas Mitgefühl. So zu hören bei Bodhisattva Vow, einer Ode an die buddhistische Spiritualität. --Douglas Wolk

REZENSION
Die Beastie Boys sind biestig. Warum auch sollten sie's irgend jemand leichtmachen? Für drei weiße Rap-Buben haben sie's weit gebracht; Ill Communication, auf ihrem Label Grand Royal, spricht dafür, daß sie's noch weiter bringen werden. Ob Hendrixsche Wah-Wah-Effekte (Futterman's Rule), Seventies-Funk à la Shaft, eine irritierende Gipsy-Violine (Eugene's Lament) oder nervenaufreibende Scratch-Effekte zu gnadenlos verzerrten Stimmen - in ihrem Big-City-Soundsalat ist alles drin. So dissonant, wie der angerichtet ist, schmeckt er nur in HipHop-Zirkeln.
