To his friends, Mr Dan is British producer, composer and DJ Dan Carey. How Things Work, his debut album, is born of the contradictory enthusiasms that drive him--though obsessed with the mechanics of recorded sound, he disdains the modern studio staples of computers and samples. Every note on How Things Work is played by Carey. This is doubtless all very commendable, but it is difficult to believe that anyone not as fascinated with recording equipment as Carey is ever going to be able to tell the difference. The music on How Things Work has its moments--especially the Saint Etienne-ish title track and Settle Down, both sung beautifully by Harriet Scott--but is mostly barely distinguishable from the digitally recorded din you'll hear clattering away in the background in any bar in Britain. How Things Work, although an ambitious folly, is a folly nevertheless. --Andrew Mueller
