By the time Roy Rogers made these two albums in the early 1970s, he was more of a brand name than a country artist: though his famous partner, the palomino stallion Trigger, had departed for the great corral in the sky in 1965, Rogers' fame was assured by dozens of somewhat hokey cowboy films, a long-running television series and a theatre show that had toured all over the world. It can only be surmised that these albums were borne of a desire by a 60-year-old Rogers to remind everyone that he could still sing a bit. As such, both are partial successes. A Man From Duck Run is named after the Ohio town in which Rogers was born, and he poses on the cover in front of the farmhouse he grew up in. It is no surprise that the album goes on to catalogue the virtues of the down-home lifestyle, and it does so in terms that vary from the unbearably glutinous (Norman Stephen's "Happiness", Ron Mason's "Spotted Dog Named Sam") to the engagingly witty (Jerry Crutchfield's ode to married life, "Lovenworth"). The Country Side Of Me is much better, finding Rogers in curiously combative mood and ably tackling Merle Haggard's "Okie From Muskogee" with all the latent irony of the original excised, along with Haggard's bellicose excoriation of the anti-Vietnam War movement, "The Fightin' Side Of Me". "The Night Guard" features some exemplary yodelling. --Andrew Mueller
