Rob Scheps returns to SteepleChase with 'Blue States', a vivid new chapter for the long-running Core-tet and a striking evolution from his 2019 release 'Comencio'. Drawing on the same sharp instincts praised in earlier reviews - his 'big-toned' authority on tenor and the 'loose, inviting allure' of his soprano - Scheps expands his palette here with an unexpected but compelling front line of trumpet, soprano saxophone, and flute. The result is a sound world both airy and electric, shaped by Scheps' gift for uncovering overlooked gems: music by Shunzo Ohno, Carla Bley, Sam Jones, Ronnie Boykins, and John Abercrombie, all reimagined with the Core-tet's signature clarity and drive. Pianist Jamie Reynolds and bassist David Kingsnorth provide luminous support, while drummer Victor Jones adds fire and finesse.
