Cee Cee James continues to bring her trademark lyrical and vocal talents expressed in crossover stylings of deep contemporary roots/blues in 12 original songs that fans will eat alive. Blood Red Blues, produced by Legendary Grammy Winning Jim Gaines, is Cee Cee's third and most exciting CD to date. Cee Cee jumps up several notches as Jim brings out the best, pushing Cee Cee to hold nothing back as she rises and meets the challenge with ease. Blood Red Blues continues the strong momentum generated from her last two releases, Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl and Seriously Raw. Both CD's generated stellar reviews in the U.S. and Europe, and held top chart positions at Cashbox, the Roots Report and at XM/Sirius BB King Bluesville.

Cee Cee James gets about 40 seconds into the opening title cut when her stylistic likeness to Janis Joplin becomes downright chilling. James' voice is fuller and less-ravaged, and if the resemblance is uncanny it's almost entirely free of affectation, sounding less like an imitation than a fortunate coincidence.

James also has an able right-hand man in Rob 'Slideboy' Andrews, who fuels the jumper Let's All Get Loose like a coal burner fuels a freight train. Loose gives way to Feel My Love Come Down, one of several numbers where Andrews sounds a lot like Foghat on a great night.

Andrews does a lot of the heavy lifting, which allows guitarist Rocky Athas to finesse his way through Loose, put overdriven blues licks to Comfort Of A Good Heart, or join with Andrews to duel on I'm Taking Mine.

Between James' voice and Andrews' style, the similarities to Joplin and Foghat are obvious. Combine this album's no-frills production and straightforward arrangements, and you might think you've come upon newly discovered tapes of Pearl herself fronting 'Lonesome' Dave Peverett's band or an elaborate hoax like the Masked Marauders, the fictitious super group that had everyone guessing back in 1969.

James goes a bit overboard with her Joplin thing sometimes, as in her original I Got A Right To Sing The Blues. But there's a lot of life and likeability to James, her original material, and this electric boogie music than mere impersonators could provide. --Vintage Guitar, November 2012
