With Laurel Hell, Mitski confirms his status as an artist capable of transcending the pop format into an intimate and universal space of exploration. Where most albums only seek to entertain, this one responds to the flaws left by a fractured and catastrophic era, turning pain and alienation into a form of restorative elixir. Following the critical success of Be the Cowboy (2018) and the influence acquired since Puberty 2 (2016), Mitski delivers here his longest matured project: tracks written for some as early as 2018, fashioned and finalized in 2021 alongside his long-time collaborator Patrick Hyland. The context of the pandemic and isolation fueled the process, giving songs new shapes and meanings over time, like seeds that became flowers. Through Laurel Hell, Mitski tackles the false mirrors of fame and the digital age, but also the duality of our human experiences: vulnerability and resilience, pain and wonder, fall and rebirth.
