Music For Intersecting Planes

Music for Intersecting Planes marks the first collaboration between cellist Leila Bordreuil and organist Kali Malone. Minimalist in its implementation but of great magnitude, the music unfolds like a thread of pearls, punctuated by silences and deep breaths. Rippling air currents emerge from the hand-operated organ, enriched by the cello's subtle harmonics to create a microscopic, grainy perspective of the timbre. Interference swirls the sound mass while Malone and Bordreuil play against the motionless background of sine waves. In the distance, church bells are ringing. An undulating feedback gives rise to insistent calls from the organ before giving way to a tragic cello pattern. The album ends with the brief and jubilant pizzicato exclamation of "Endless Dance of Eternal Joy". Recorded by candlelight at the Temple of St. Theoduée in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, the music strikes a balance between patience and intensity, composition and chance, rigor and tenderness. From this collaboration emerged new facets of the two artists: Bordreuil's play, of increased tonal and formal clarity, and Malone's work on the organ, in its raw, textured form. Music for Intersecting Planes is a meeting of two minds that pays tribute to the timeless fascination that acoustic phenomena arise.
