Product description Great Music CD in excellent condition with a red cardboard sleeve, fast dispatch, UK SELLER Amazon.co.uk First contact with Hawkins' music was alternately joyful and bewildering. The Unstoppable Ted Hawkins brings it all back. Here was a singer with a voice to die for, a Sam Cooke risen from the grave, by turns pleading and positive, wistful and wily. But the songbook in his head was unique, a great fat scrapbook of soul and R&B and country, everything from "Dock of the Bay" and "Let the Good Times Roll" to "Your Cheating Heart" and, good grief, "Country Roads"--mingled with pieces of his own, odd yet gripping and hard to forget, such as "Watch Your Step" and "The Lost Ones". All these and a dozen or so more are gathered in the warm embrace of a show Hawkins gave, alone with his guitar, one winter night in 1988, at London's Mean Fiddler club. He died a few years later, but this informal recording, issued here for the first time, conjures up more than a ghost of his good-humoured and immensely likeable presence. --Tony Russell Review Nearly six years after the death at age 59 of troubadour Ted Hawkins, this superb live recording suddenly surfaces. Recorded on a cassette Walkman by guitarist Michael Messer with view to using it as a reference for learning some of Ted's songs, it caught the man at his very best. There are a few microphone pops but overall the sound has such presence and is so well balanced that it's hard to equate it with the way it was recorded. The performance, which took place in December 1988 at the Mean Fiddler Acoustic Room, Harlesden, is confident but relaxed, intimate yet powerful. Ted's enjoying himself immensely and his enjoyment is infectious. The easy strum of his guitar falls lightly on the ear while the glow in his voice warms the heart. The set list is typical Ted Hawkins--some soul and country covers interspersing Ted's own songs--and, of course, "Zip Pe Dee Doo Dah". If previous fans think they shouldn't bother because they've heard it all before they should think again as this is a record of a great performance. The presence of an audience spurs Ted to reach a little further than on his studio recordings and his verbal communication with his audience is quite delightful. For those who might like to sample the simple pleasures of the honey bear voiced Mr Hawkins then this CD is the place to start. © fRoots Magazine all rights reserved -- fRoots, June 2001
