The Chinese composer Wang Jianzhong was born in Shanghai in 1933. He was trained at the Conservatory there, the first establishment to offer courses in Western music. He later joined the teaching staff, and apart from the period of the Cultural Revolution, during which the Conservatory was closed, he had continued there as a Professor in Composition and Theory. Ma Sheung Tsz belongs to the post-revolution generation in China. She was born in Hong Kong, but went as a child to Shanghai, where she studied and had her later career. She is a member of a distinguished musical family; her uncle, Ma Sisong, enjoyed a reputation as a violinist and composer, while her mother was also a well-known pianist. Ma Sheung Tsz has long been associated with the Shanghai Philharmonic Society and has given numerous concerts in the major cities in China.
