The Rawsthorne revival continues apace with this invaluable anthology, performed with unwavering insight and blistering dedication by all involved, and very decently engineered into the bargain. Both the violin-and-piano Concertante and Viola Sonata date from before the Second World War. In point of fact, the manuscript of the latter piece--a particularly stylish effort and full of good things--was believed lost until its rediscovery in 1953 by Watson Forbes (violist father of the knowledgeable annotator here, Sebastian). Even more rewarding is the Cello Sonata of 1949, which shows the composer very much at the height of his powers. Observe, too, how the sombre opening measures sow the seeds for nearly all that follows (such is Rawsthorne's breathtaking thematic economy). Naxos also give us the bracing idiom of the 1962 Piano Trio, the second of whose two linked movements is a fertile "Theme and Variations" (a form at which this figure always excelled), while the even later Piano Quintet makes an imposing curtain-raiser (the admirable pianist here, John McCabe, also played in the work's first performance).
