The participants were chosen from thousands who attended auditions in Los Angles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Miami and Puerto Rico. For the duration of the competition, the contestants were sequestered from their family and friends with limited access to TV, phones, or newspapers. 14 "Saturday Gala" Presentations in one of Puerto Ricos historical theaters set the stage for these participants, whos vocal and performance abilities were tested in a variety of genres.
