'Bostonian Speidel plays lots of electric guitar, his fervid imagination challenging his fingers to keep up on an all-instrumental set recorded in a neighborhood watering hole. He and his two jazz-minded colleagues flow ideas in jazzy interplay with few seams showing. Their blues-rock moves are genuinely exciting. Three stars.' -- Frank-John Hadley (Downbeat) 'Speidel is truly at home with the bluesy side of his material as is evident with the album's fretboard masterpiece 'Burnslide'. Speidel dials this composition right in and exhibits some of his best guitar playing on the track.Music lovers with an ear for blues, jazz and improv should dig Speidel's new offering of 'Guitar Bass Drums.' -- Douglas Sloan (Metronome) 'This CD should appeal to many whether they are a traditional blues lover or even a guitar lover. These guys have pulled it off as very few can. The playing is tight, concise and fluid. Paul's mastery of guitar makes for a very pleasing experience. The rhythm section keeps the music on a great track. He seems to meld blues and jazz to perfection here while keeping a pure blues feel. This is a great product and a definite keeper. The voicings, timings and rhythms were superb throughout. If you are in or plan to be in the Boston area, these guys are a must see.' -- Tom Pinnock (Lever's Blues Blog, Blues Web Ring) 'Enjoyable.Speidel's dexterous guitar licks, as on the slow Blues 'Burnslide', are the 'voice' on this recording which will appeal primarily to musicians and fans of Blues guitar. Not just Blues, but Jazz ('Beautiful and Blue'), Rock ('Dirty Mudflaps') and even New Age ('Solar Winds'). Three stars. -- Dylann DeAnna (BluesCritic.com) 'Top Five Picks!' (Metronome Magazine, April 2006) Paul Speidel has earned a reputation in the Boston music scene as a versatile and energetic guitarist who has freelanced extensively, as well as fronted his own blues and jazz groups. After playing hundreds of shows since the early '90s and having released six CDs since the early 2000s, his music has at last begun to catch the ear of local radio, including spins on stations such as WZLX, WBRS, and WMFO, among others. From 1994-1999, the Paul Speidel Band was the featured group at the Sunday Night Blues Jam Sessions in Newton (later the Blues Showcase in Newton), which they hosted as the house band, backing top amateurs and professional names, firmly establishing the band's name and reputation among fellow musicians and local media. Since then, The Paul Speidel Band have been bringing their signature instrumental sound to nightclubs such as The Rack, Dante's at Firefly's, Ryles, The Cantab Lounge, The Plough and Stars, The Bull Run, The Regent Theatre and neighborhood locales--some strictly blues like The Next Page Café, others more diverse such as The Milky Way Lounge and Lanes and The Midway Café. Prominent performers Paul has appeared with throughout his career include Duke Robillard (Roomful of Blues, Fabulous Thunderbirds), Jay Geils (J. Geils Band), James Montgomery, Shirley Lewis, Toni Lynn Washington, Dennis Brennan, Geoff Bartley (Tom Rush) and many, many other talented artists, including nationally-known musicians such as jazz guitar virtuoso Howard Alden and famed vocalist Patti Page. He has performed extensively throughout the New England, Chicago, and Denver regions, and recently opened for legendary fellow guitarist Johnny A.
