BEGINNINGS In a fascinating land of extraordinary natural beauty, where everything quickly becomes an adventure, Gloria Lynda was born. In the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Gloria joined the steadily growing Alvear family of three brothers-David, Jonathan and Daniel-and one sister, Susan. Her father, Juan, was certain this new baby was going to be a girl and had decided on her name long before she was born. Mother Dorothy wasn't so sure, but was very happy with her arrival. Another sister, Alba, was added to the family eight years later. Gloria was born into a family with a rich heritage in Christian ministry. Her paternal grandfather had pioneered many churches in the country of Chile. Her maternal grandfather had pastored several churches in the USA before going with his family to do mission work in the countries of Argentina and Chile. It was in Chile where Gloria's parents, Juan and Dorothy, met at a Bible seminary in the city of Santiago and were eventually married. Upon graduating and being ordained to the ministry, Gloria's father held evangelistic campaigns in many of the large cities of Chile for about a year. The young couple then went to Bolivia, but felt it was to Brazil that God had called them to establish a work. That is where they spent most of the next four decades, dedicating their lives to the ministry of the gospel. Gloria's life quickly became a rich and exquisite mixture of cultures. She recalls that only English was spoken at home during her childhood, and Portuguese was used in public. This was the parents' way of making sure that all the children mastered the two languages. At times, Spanish was also heard as her father communicated with her Chilean uncles and grandparents (who by this time also lived in Brazil). Trips to the United States to visit her mother's family strengthened this side of the family's roots, ingraining and enhancing this aspect of their culture, while living in Brazil transformed them all into authentic 'Paulistanos'. The end result is an intricate combination of traits, each acquired from different places. MUSICAL HERITAGE Music always played an enormous part in Gloria's life. Whether it was listening to her Mother's sweet voice while she sang and played her accordion at home and in church meetings, her father and uncles singing and playing their guitars, her oldest brother, Dave, composing on his own guitar, or brother, Jon, playing his trumpet, music was always present in one way or another. Various styles, from the different cultures she had contact with, were slowly absorbed into her musical sensitivity, and stored up as part of her musical repertoire. She was just six years old when she sang together with her mother, brothers and sister, on a small 45 rpm record that was recorded in the United States. This was done in Spanish and English. Later, as a young girl, she resided for several years with her family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, where she had the opportunity of participating in the church choir. This was a great learning experience for her and, upon returning to Brazil with her parents in 1978, she actively participated in the church music, singing and directing the youth choir. EXPANDING HORIZONS The year 1981 found her embarking on yet another adventure, this time to a country which she had visited only once in her lifetime-Argentina. Ever since that day, Argentina has captivated her, and this is confirmed by the fact that she currently continues to live there. Her life experiences were broadened as she worked with a church group in this country for many years, assisting in various ways, first in the southern provinces of Neuquen and Rio Negro, and after approximately nine years in this region, in the capital city of Buenos Aires for the following nine years. Although she was involved in various church projects, her main focus was always in the musical department. Once again, you could find her singing in the churches, establishing and directing choirs, translating songs from other languages to Spanish and more. RECORDINGS In 1992, Gloria, was invited to participate in a recording by a fellow musician, Raúl Ojeda. The title of the album is 'Te Amo, Mi Señor' and all of the songs are in Spanish. She collaborated recording a solo track called 'Solo En Ti'-a bluesy rendition-while also harmonizing with Raúl on other tracks. In 1995, she participated in the recording of another album titled 'Simplemente Por Amor', in which she recorded five tracks: 'Voy Más Allá', 'Victoria en Cristo', 'Amar a Dios', 'El Reina', and 'Dios Es Muy Bueno Para Mi' (God Is So Good To Me). This last song was performed in English and Spanish. COSMOPOLITAN GOSPEL Her debut album, 'Cosmopolitan Gospel,' which was released in April of this year, 2006, comes at a time when she feels the need to express God's goodness through her music with a broader audience. The title was chosen with the purpose of repesenting the entire concept of the album itself, which is a compilation of several styles and choices of music, each very unique, performed in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Cosmopolitan Gospel, also brings together all the different cultures which have influenced Gloria throughout her life. She considers the songs themselves some of her personal favorites. The lyrics reflect the incredible love Jesus has for every one of us, and our love for Him. The ultimate purpose of this album, is to glorify God and His incomparable greatness, and to draw each listener into an intimate moment of fellowship with Him. The cosmopolitan concept is to emphasize the fact that God is the God of all nations and all people, thus bringing each one of us to express our praise and worship in diverse manners-all of which are celebrated by Him. This album comes across as an invigorating breath of fresh air. HER TREASURES. Besides Gloria's deep satisfaction at having achieved a personal dream, she also had the pride and joy of having her three daughters participate in this musical endeavor. They contributed all of the female backup vocals, producing delightful harmony. Her first child, Deborah, was born in Evansville, IN, USA. Johanna and Jessica, her second and third daughters were born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Deborah and her husband, Roberto, have given Gloria three beautiful grandchildren: Lautaro 5, Lara 2 and Dante 2 1/2 months at this writing. Without a doubt, they are her most precious treasures!
