White Water Safety with Bruce Jolliffe and Dougie Shannon is a concise instructional guide on safety and rescue methods suitable for white water kayakers and canoeists. Presented in 10 easy to follow chapters this DVD covers how to; prepare for the white water environment, recognise river features, strategically navigate rapids, self rescue, help other paddlers and recover equipment. Bruce and Dougie have several years paddling experience and have paddled extensively in Asia, North America and Europe. They are both British Canoe Union White Water Safety and Rescue Trainers and Level 5 Coaches. Most importantly they are active white water paddlers who have trained hundreds of paddlers in these techniques. Filmed on multiple HD cameras by award winning cameraman Paul Diffley and presented by Bruce and Dougie, White Water Safety brings the highest quality demonstrations directly to you.
REVIEW
Shot against the beautiful backdrop of the Spanish Pyrenees, White Water Safety is an instructional DVD written and presented by BCU L5 coaches and active whitewater paddlers Bruce Jolliffe and Dougie Shannon. With the award-winning cameraman Paul Diffley and experienced television editor David Clark on board, the production values are, unsurprisingly, very good; combined with the alluring and sunny backdrop, the entire film makes compelling viewing. This is always more than a welcomed bonus when it comes to instructional DVDs: it aids clarity and makes for an enjoyable viewing experience, which in turn means that it is easier to absorb the instruction in the film. What makes White Water Safety an effective home-learning tool, though is how the information is structured. It takes the not-unusual approach of dividing the subject into chapters - ten, in this case, which can be watched in one long continuous film that moves progressively from basic aspects to more advanced ones, or viewed as more bite-sized chunks. Every topic covered is well illustrated with demonstrations filmed from multiple angles in HD. What is useful is how clearly each section is introduced, with a mixture of voice over and bank side presenting, meaning that if you are using a specific chapter for reference, you will know right away if the specific instruction you are looking for is contained within that chapter. What we enjoyed most about the DVD was how the subject of whitewater safety is divided into these sections. While some of the chapters focus on very specific things - such as 'Basic Assisted Rescues' or 'The Art of Throwbags' - there are chapters, such as 'What makes a Safer Paddler' that take a more holistic approach to the general ideals that underpin whitewater safety. Throughout the DVD the tone remains upbeat, and very much focussed on ensuring that paddling is fun and safe in equal measure; even the more serious aspects of whitewater safety are handled delicately, with enough gravity but without losing sight of the positive nature of whitewater paddling. There is no doubting the expertise and enthusiasm of either Bruce or Dougie as coaches and presenters, and the extra material filmed in Scotland covering open canoe whitewater safety with Steve MacDonald and Richard Turner is equally informative and well presented. White Water Safety is a concise but holistic look at all aspects of this important subject, beautifully shot and edited: a fantastic addition to the whitewater safety media library. --Canoe & Kayak UK Magazine
I ordered a copy of the White Water Safety Movie form Eddyline Films a few weeks ago after watching part of it, 5-10 mins, at this years Tyne Tour. The DVD is broken down into 10 chapters, each of which is then subdivided into a number of key elements. I watched the DVD in one go and can best describe it as just like being on a course and having 1:1 tuition. It has a really nice warm/supportive feel (if that makes sense). I really like the format, it assumes no prior knowledge and takes the viewer through each of the key elements of white water safety in a calm, practical way with a clear and logical progression. The video is well shot and well edited. After 25+ years of white water paddling I still picked loads of new information and techniques. The chapters are structured as follows: Chapter 1 Getting Ready Chapter 2 River Features Chapter 3 What Makes a Safer Paddler? Chapter 4 Group Boating Strategies Chapter 5 Safe Swimming and Self Rescue Chapter 6 Basic Assisted Rescues Chapter 7 The Art of Throwbags Chapter 8 Hitches, Knots and Anchors Chapter 9 Wading, Live Bait and Taglines Chapter 10 Recovering Equipment At £19.99 + P&P the DVD represents great value and will be invaluable for both clubs and individuals. --http://www.unsponsored.co.uk
