Violent Viola

Alongside two other great viola players of our time, Kim Kashkashian and Yuri Bashmet, the renowned soloist Esther Apituley has worked tirelessly over the years to bring the instrument out from under the shadows of the violin and cello. She has made it a priority to present programs and projects which are characterized by their originality, versatility, and accessibility. In going beyond the traditional performing style for classical music, she adopts a more liberated, unorthodox approach. In 2000 she founded the Amsterdam Viola Quartet which is heard on several tracks on the disc.

'Violent Viola' is a collection which covers a wide and eclectic range, with music dating from the 16th century (John Dowland) through to the 20th (Kodaly and Britten). Other composers included are Hindemith, Bach, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Vieuxtemps.
