Toen countryblues in het midden van de jaren 20 populair werd, werd het door zowel zwarte als witte muzikanten gespeeld. Ook het publiek kende alle kleuren. Platenmaatschappijen maakten weliswaar een onderscheid (de race series was gericht op een zwart publiek en de hillbilly series op een wit), maar tussen de muzikanten was er veel uitwisseling en samenspel.
