DESCRIPTION

Angel Witch began life in Beckenham, South London at the end of the 1970’s. Guitarist/vocalist Kevin Heybourne had cut his teeth with a variety of bands, before joining Rob Downing on rhythm guitar, and a varying rhythm section to form Lucifer. In 1977, another group with the same name threatened legal action, and Angel Witch, named after a song Heybourne has already written, were born. A year and numerous personnel changes later, the classic line-up of Heybourne, 17 stone bassist Kevin “Skids” Riddles and drummer Dave Hogg were on the march. Marrying together thunderous riffs, bombastic rhythms and tongue-in-cheek Satanic lyrics, the Witch made no secret of their Black Sabbath influences, often including “Paranoid” in their live set. From there things moved quickly. While the trio recruited fans at venues like the Ruskin Arms in East London, Neal Kaye at the Heavy Metal Soundhouse offered them a spot on the “Metal Crusade” tour with the likes of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Praying Mantis and Sledgehammer. Before they knew it, Angel Witch has become a cog in the wheel of what the media began to call the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.Their bulldozer riffs and no-frills presentation earned them a devoted following. They would smash attendance records at London’s Marquee Club - only AC/DC ever pulled more punters at the “old” Wardour Street venue - but the next step up the ladder always remained tantalisingly out of reach. There were moments of triumph in 1980, at the Reading Festival and Motorhead’s Stafford Bingley Hall all-dayer but they eventually called it a day in 1981. What goes around comes around and there has been a number of Angel Witch comebacks still guided by the unflappable Heybourne.
