2009 release, the third album from the British Rock/Pop quartet. The Rakes decided they wanted to record in a fresh and exciting new environment, so they relocated to an industrial area in the old Communist part of Berlin. "The London music scene is so dull - it's like wading through a swamp of shit. We just wanted to be somewhere more inspiring", said Rakes singer Alan Donohoe. "Someone suggested Berlin. It didn't take long for everyone to agree, we packed our bags and moved here just like that. We love it". They lived and recorded in the grounds of a Bauhaus-designed, Soviet radio station that had been converted into a studio. On working with producer Chris Zane, Alan Donohoe adds: "The album is raw, playful, exciting, complex and schizophrenic - much like the personality of Berlin itself. It couldn't be more of a fitting place to record it". V2.

The Rakes gönnen sich keine Verschnaufpausen; kaum zwei Jahre sind seit ihrem Zweitling "Ten New Messages" vergangen und schon veröffentlichen die Londoner ihr drittes, atemloses Album "Klang".

Drei trockene Gitarrenakkorde, ein wirbelndes Schlagzeug - "You're in it" singt Alan Donohoe und los stürmen The Rakes mit tighten Songs und eingängigen Melodien, wie schon auf ihren beiden Vorgängeralben. Doch "Klang" ist weit weniger gefällig. Alles Poppige klingt ironisch ("Bitchin' In The Kitchen") oder endet schließlich in Verzerrung und Dissonanz ("The Woes Of The Working Women"). Die Arrangements sind sparsam: Gitarre, Bass, Drums, und nur vereinzelt ein Klaviereinsatz. Manchmal ein wenig verstimmt, jedoch stets auf den Punkt. Prägnant thront darin der Gesang Donohoes, fortwährend auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen schön und schräg, gehetzt und gelöst. Die Songs sind rau, spröde, wie der Gitarrensound, ungestüm und eklektisch, an Einfällen und Wendungen.
Dabei hat "Klang" auch seine leichtfüßigen Momente, vor allem in "1989", der beschwingten Hommage an seinen Entstehungsort Berlin. Der Endspurt ("The Final Hill") der zehn Dreiminüter verwendet wie der Startschuss ein zackiges Gitarrenriff und hinterlässt den Hörer atemlos.
