This 1975 recording of Rossini's popular opera buffa "La Cenerentola" (Cinderella) boasts a fine cast under the baton of the eminent Italian conductor Piero Bellugi. It features the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin State Opera Chorus. History tells us that Gioacchino Rossini was continually under pressure to compose new works and often had to finish complete scores in farcically short periods of time. "La Cenerentola" tells the story of the fairy-tale character we know of as Cinderella, and was written over a period of three weeks. As was often the case, he was obliged to borrow music from his own compositions in order to meet the deadlines put upon him. Despite all this the opera was to become one of the composer's great successes and enjoyed lasting popularity during his lifetime. In fact following it's première at the Teatro Vall in Rome in 1817, La Cenerentola achieved the reputation as the best opera buffa of it's time, even eclipsing his own masterpiece "The Barber of Seville".
