Upon listening to Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday, it's obvious that San Francisco's Creeper Lagoon have come a long way since their 1998 debut, I Become Small And Go. Then they won a fanatical following with their intense brand of rough-edged rock. Now they aim for the mass market, with a far more slick and polished modern rock effort that places them in the same bracket as the enormously popular Third Eye Blind. Considering they employed no fewer than four producers--including David Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) and Jerry Harrison (Live)--the sound is remarkably consistent. Yet the smooth production does not always serve the songs well. In their efforts to appeal, they occasionally veer towards the corny, particularly with "Hey Sister" and the sad, saccharin "Naked Days". Far more impressive are the 1960s-style ballad "Lover's Leap" and the rough-house rockers "Wrecking Ball" and "Chance Of A Lifetime", where singer Sharky Laguana leads a rousing chorus and the band recapture some of their earlier passion. It remains to be seen whether this sonic cleansing will deliver sales in the multi-millions, or simply shear them of all credibility. The former seems more likely. --Dominic Wills
