EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Who is Adriana Evans? Her self titled debut from the spring of 1997, alongside Erykah Badu's, 'Baduizm', helped usher in what would later be dubbed the 'Neo-Soul' movement. Praised by the most discerning critics, it still sold 75,000+ units even with poor promotion and distribution. No longer signed to a label, her second album, 'Nomadic' was previously only available at her shows or on her website. It is a departure from her first album in that it draws it's inspiration from many genres of music including samba, reggae, rock, hip-hop and jazz but all VERY soulfully composed. An extremely unique sound that defies description, it can only be truly understood when you give it a listen. Fast forward to the present and Animatedcartunes is proud to announce the Nomadic album will now be available to retail in all formats and the CD will be enhanced to include a music video for the song, '7 Days'. Adriana is a pioneering force of the modern day neo-soul movement, still alive and kicking with a hungry fan base starving for music rich in substance. help feed that demand.
REVIEW
Mmm. An album that speaks like a loved one s warm embrace here s a timeless collection from a seasoned vocalist and her savvy producer Dred Scott. Evans channels jazz on Morning Light, rock on the cover What It Is and pure soul music on her ode to song, I Hear Music. Hints of Afro-Cuban rhythms are at ease with a chorus of synthesizers matching her perfect pitch. Longtime collaborators Evans and Scott make songs that are delicious to stumble upon. --Tamara Warren - XLR8R Magazine
As you listen to Nomadic you get the feeling that Adriana Evans is doing her best to give you a piece of her life influences in the most authentic way possible. You see while a lot of soul singers have just recently put down their mpc s and samplers, Adriana made this musical excursion more the 7 years ago. Using the kind of instrumentation that has been once again made common place in the soul scene, it s her voice that is the glue on this trip through her many moods and experiences.
While this album may disappoint if you re looking for a copy of her first album, if you ve been enjoying soul s recent affinity towards picking up a guitar, piano, drum set and a great voice you ll love what you hear on this album. 7 days , the lead single, exemplifies the sound of this album. While the soul in Adriana s voice cuts through, the infusion of rock and afro-cuban rhythms and instrumentation let you in on why this album is called Nomadic. The second track on the album Remember The Love is a Latin infused ode to summer love and on Night In Bahia the Latin influence shows up in the title more than the music. Be warned, you shouldn t settle in to the Latin sound or you ll be thrown by reggae tracks like I Had A Dream and Former Self . While this album seems to take you on trips to Jamaica and Latin America, the urban centers and classic soul sound of the states is not missed.
Listening to Nomadic is truly what the name implies, a journey that will not let you stay in the same place very much or for very long. While this album is a re-issue it shows how far ahead of the curve Adriana Evans is when deciding on the sound for her albums. --Rai-mon Nemar - Nu-Soulmag.com
After a seven-year absence from the musical radar, singer-songwriter Adriana Evans returns with her long-awaited, sophomore set aptly titled NOMADIC. While her debut introduced an accomplished singer with a beautiful voice and an old soul, NOMADIC attempts to fuse different musical styles with interesting results. As with her debut, Adriana collaborates with Jonathan Dred Scott to create a gumbo brimming over with Latin, soul, rock and jazz ingredients. --J. Brotherlove - thebrotherlove.com
