One of the great lost neo-psych albums of the '90s, See You on the Other Side has been unjustly overshadowed through the years by the commercial success of its celebrated follow-up, Deserter's Songs. It's also very much the work of a band in transition; volatile lead singer David Baker has departed, taking with him the dark hues coloring Mercury Rev's first couple of albums (and the band took another three years to make another record after this one). What remains, however, is a sunny psychedelic smorgasbord ranging from the Pet Soundsstyle pop of "Everlasting Arm" to the Forever Changes-esque trippy easy listening of "Sudden Ray of Hope," laced with enough heavy, treated guitars to prevent See You on the Other Side from lapsing into lightweight, kandykolored whimsy. Indeed, when Jonathan Donahue sings "I'm so close/I'm almost inside/I'm so close/I'm racing the tide" not only do you want to know what drugs he's on but also does he have any left? For its first LP reissue, we've pressed up 1000 copies in metallic rust vinyl and placed them inside a printed inner sleeve nestled next to a lyric insert. Highly recommended!
