Lange galten die Werke von Charles Ives als schwer aufzuführende Kompositionen. Doch Michael Tilson Thomas machte mit den brillanten Orchestern aus Chicago, San Francisco und Amsterdam in den Achtziger und Neunziger Jahren klar, dass komplexe Musik nicht kompliziert zu spielen sein müsse. So fein abgestuft, so reich an Klangfarben hatte Ives' Musik bis dahin nicht geklungen. Kein Wunder, dass damals in Stereoplay zu lesen war: "Musik für Fortgeschrittene, die sich den Spaß an der Musik bewahrt haben".
