Rockabilly is an early type of rock music that was created by white musicians in the US southern states. It was most popular from the mid-50s to the 60s and was revived in the late 70s. Record critics first coined the term rockabilly, which literally translates as: "rock'n roll played by hillbillies" In the late 1940s, radio played rhythm and blues and gospel across North America, inspiring young Caucasian working-class musicians (especially in areas with African-American populations) to mix black music styles with country sounds. The result was originally labelled country-and-western rhythm and blues, but became known as rockabilly despite the mostly derogatory connotations of the word hillibilly.
