Gene Autry, or the Singing Cowboy, was a country singer in the 1930s who had his musical breakthrough with "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine." With over 500,000 copies sold in one year, he became a celebrity in the United States. His record company made a gold bronze covered record to make the success visible. Thus was born the first unofficial "Golden Record". He owed his name as the Singing Cowboy to many Hollywood westerns in which he successfully starred. Unforgotten hits like "Back in the saddle again", "Don't fence me in", "In the jailhouse now", "Texas plains", "South of the border", "Yodelling hobo" and "You are my sunshine" made him become one of the most successful country singers of all time. Still today, Gene Autry is the only artist with 5 stars on the Hollywood Hall of Fame in the categories, film, TV, theater, music and radio.
