Kathleen Hanna hat die Mitglieder von The Julie Run so unbemerkt zusammengeführt, dass niemand von ihnen wusste was genau passiert ist. Alles begann Ende 2009: Kathleen hatte seit LE TIGRES „This Island“ (2004) kein Album mehr veröffentlicht und war bereit endlich wieder Musik zu machen. Sie wusste, dass ihre Bikini Kill Bandkollegin Kathi Wilcox bald nach New York ziehen wollte und kümmerte sich deswegen für ihr neues Projekt erstmal nicht um eine Alternative am Bass. Zusätzlich heuerte sie Carmine Covelli an, der zuvor als „Video-Guru“ mit Le Tigre auf Tour gewesen ist, ob er nicht der Schlagzeuger der Band sein möchte. Außerdem lockte Kathleen ihre Kollegin vom Girls Rock Camp, die Gitarristin Sara Landeau, in die Band, indem sie ProTools- gegen Gitarrenstunden tauschte. Das letzte Bandmitglied fand sie schließlich in Keyboarder Kenny Mellman. Und fertig war The Julie Ruin.

Ende 2014 begannen die Arbeiten zu ihrem zweiten Album „Hit Reset“. Gemischt wurde es von Eli Crews, der die Band bereits zuvor unterstützte. „Hit Reset“ erweitert den bereits bekannten Sound der Band: tanzbarer auf der einen und zugleich launischer auf der anderen Seite, mit weiblichen Backing Vocals und sogar einer berührenden Ballade. Es ist der Sound einer Band die ihr Optimum erreicht hat. Kathleens Gesang ist einfach stark und ihre Texte sind zugespitzt und ergreifend wie immer. Von den schaurigen ersten Zeilen des Openers „Hit Reset“ bis hin zum „Calverton“ nimmt uns Kathleen Hanna auf eine sehr persönliche Reise mit, die man so vom ersten Album noch nicht kannte.

The Julie Ruin's second album literally resets the career of the post-riot grrrl band and its frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, the movement s reluctant spokeswoman, whose chronic illness forced the band off the road in 2014. With Lyme disease in abeyance, these 13 new songs fizz and rage with a mixture of girl-group sass (key track: Rather Not) and surf-garage buzz. No one could accuse Hanna of ducking issues (see Bikini Kill or Le Tigre, previous Hanna outfits), but Hit Reset is even more personal, with the title track recalling her father, and the closing piano ballad (yes, piano ballad) a love song to her mother. The particularly excellent Hello Trust No One combines synth-pop with Hanna's transcendental ranting, still one of the seven wonders of the punk world. * * * * - Kitty Empire --The Observer

.The result is a record that s as fun as it is furious, and as confrontational as it is cool. Musically it comes over like a lo-fi take on the 1960s girl group sound, as trashy as a John Waters movie, like The Cramps smothered in candyfloss. The opening, title track Hit Reset launches you straight into the emotional storm that was Kathleen Hanna's childhood: ''Slept with the lights on, on the floor/behind the chair that blocked the door,'' she sings. Later, there's the suggestion of escape, before the chorus delivers the sucker punch, ''I don't think you're sorry at all!'' - the lack of closure that keeps the victim trapped. Small wonder, then, that Hanna's vocal approach Yoko Ono-like intensity in places (Be Nice, I'm Done). Then, generously, the former Bikini Kill/ Le Tigre front woman balances the raw hurt with the addictive bubble-gum pop of I Decide, Rather Not and Planet You. --The Sunday Times
