Two-thirds of the great Borodin Trio collaborates here on major Russian cello sonatas. The Rachmaninoff sonata, a virtuoso workout for the piano especially, gets a remarkably expansive performance here, everything sounding appropriately larger than life. It takes up most of the disc and it's the reason most people will buy it. If you do, don't stop until you get to Miaskovsky, a forgotten man in Russian music who richly deserves a revival. Miaskovsky, like his friend Prokofiev, started his career as an avant-garde fire-thrower, and became more conservative as his career progressed. This sonata hardly even sounds like 20th century music, but it's lovely. --Leslie Gerber
