Vincent d'Indy entwickelte sich gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mehr und mehr zu einem erklärten Antipoden Claude Debussys. Die fünfte Folge der CHANDOS-Serie mit Orchesterwerken präsentiert dabei mit der 'Symphonie sur un chant montagnard français' Op.25 nicht nur eines seiner bekanntesten und beliebtesten Werke, sondern mit dem Vorspiel zu seiner ersten Oper 'Fervaal' Op.40 und der Sinfonischen Dichtung 'Saugefleurie' Op.21 Stücke, auf die das Etikett des französischen Wagnerisme vorbehaltlos zutrifft. Für die Aufnahme konnte nicht nur Louis Lortie als Solist in der Symphonie Op.25 gewonnen werden, es ist auch die erste Aufnahme aus der erst 2011 eröffneten Harpa, die von Gramophone als beste Konzerthalle des neuen Jahrtausends gekürt wurde.

D'indy (1851-1931) is a troubling figure. Antisemitic and anti-Dreyfusard, his far-right views place him beyond any ideological pale for many. Yet he was also a composer of considerable stature, and Chandos's ongoing retrospective of his orchestral works this is volume five is a reminder of just how influential he was. The main work here, the Symphonie sur un Chant Montagnard Français (1886) for piano and orchestra, remains the most familiar piece in his output. Saugefleurie (1884) is a darkly erotic fairytale, Médée (1898) the rather uneven incidental music to a reworking of Euripides by Catulle Mendès. In each case, the mixture of post-Wagnerian chromaticism and refined orchestral sensuousness is typical of a style that left an indelible impression on French music for decades. The performances, from the Iceland Symphony under Rumon Gamba, are faultless. Louis Lortie is the restrained yet dexterous soloist in the Symphonie.**** --Guardian, 11/04/13
