Oscar Peterson's The Composer is an attractive CD that draws on five Pablo albums spanning the 1970s and 80s. All 10 pieces were penned by Peterson himself, and the earliest are the best: two majestic performances from his musically triumphant tour of Russia in 1974. Both "Hogtown Blues" and "Place St Henri" are solo flights of awesome virtuosity and melodic imagination, and if you don't have the original double-CD, they are almost worth the price of this compilation on their own. Elsewhere there are stirring readings of "L'Impossible", "Night Child" and "If Only You Knew", and if the two selections from Peterson's 1981 Royal Wedding Suite have proved the least durable, they retain a certain poignant charm, not least because of what happened in 1997. Peterson has in the main been rather self-deprecatory about his writing, but his corpus of work is considerable in both senses, and this intelligent showcasing of his composer's art should appeal to newcomers and veterans alike. --Richard Palmer
