Mit Conscious Party und One Bright Day hatte er deutlich aus Vater Bobs Schatten treten können. Mit Jahmekya nun wagt Ziggy Marley noch einen weiteren Schritt in Richtung eigener musikalischer Ortsbestimmung: Mit Hip-Hop-, Rap-, Pop- und Gospel-Elementen soll der Reggae erweitert und aus eingefahrenen Bahnen geholt werden. Doch der Versuch gelingt nicht immer: Hin und wieder wird's deutlich zu flach. Dennoch, auch Jahmekya zeigt eines klar: Die Krone ist in der Familie geblieben - und soll dort bleiben.
