Madonna showcased her range by starring in Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy and releasing an album to accompany the picture. This proved to be a fruitful collaboration for the songstress, who took inspiration from the film's Prohibition-era setting, as well as the modern day's house music boom. The timeless hit "Vogue" escaped the film and hit the clubs, becoming one of her crowning achievements.

En vogue ist an dieser faustdicken Überraschung nur die gleichnamige Hitnummer. Ansonsten springt Madonna aus der Groove-Aber-Doof-Schublade und beschwört hier die 30er Jahre herauf - fast eine Provokation. Ob Nobel-Blues (Sooner Or Later), Schmacht-Ballade (Noe I'm Following You) oder angerollten Schmalspur-Swing (Hanky Panky) - Madonna liefert stilechtes, wenn auch simmgewaltfreies Entertainment. Den Atem dürfte die Risiko-Scheibe aber höchstens ihren Verkaufsmanagern rauben.

Madonnas neues Album "I'm Breathless" raubt nicht nur ihr, sondern auch ihren Fans den Atem. Die Vorab-Auskopplung, der Dancefloor-Hit "Vogue", hat nur wenig mit dem restlichen Inhalt zu tun. So blieb kaum etwas von der ausgelassenen Party-Stimmung übrig, die "Like A Prayer" 1989 zu einer feinen Pop-Scheibe werden ließ. Inspiriert vom Film "Dick Tracy" reflektieren viele der neuen Songs das turbulente Amerika der 30er Jahre. Madonna selbst versucht sich - im Film und auf Platte - als Entertainerin: Big-Band-Sound ist angesagt statt Pop-Kultur. Doch das international erfolgreichste Schlager-Sternchen rutscht auf dem ungewohnten Parkett prompt aus. Ihre Interpretationen wirken platt und vordergründig - etwa in der Saxophon-Ballade "Sooner Or Later", in der sie verruchte Bar- Atmosphäre nicht vermitteln kann; oder im swingenden "More", wo Madonna jedes Gespür für das Genre fehlt. Zu kindlich klingt auch der Quickstep "Now I'm Following You" mit Madonnas Lover, dem Film-Beau Warren Beatty, als Duett-Partner. Durchaus geglückt ist dagegen die Verschmelzung von Swing-Rhythmen mit modernem Tanzfeuer in "Hanky Panky". Ebenfalls auf der Habenseite steht der flotte Latin "I'm Going Bananas" mit stilechten Mariachi-Bläsern. Insgesamt aber kann Miß Ciccone ihren hochgesteckten Zielen kaum gerecht werden. ** Interpret.: 04-07 ** Klang.: 07-08
