A very entertaining line-up and release, indeed!

This looks at first like a second instalment of the delinquent readings of the Cuban style of the 1940s and 1950s which made Ribot's 1998 album Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos such a success. Certainly the same period inspirations drive the new set but Ribot seems to have moved in a more populist direction with greater emphasis on vocals and less on instrumental settings for his incendiary guitar playing. "Dame Un Cachito Pa'Huele", for example, develops into a gawky parade of heavy drum backbeats, crunching rock guitar and shouting vocal choruses. There are nevertheless some ear-catching episodes, including "El Gaucho Rojo", a samba vehicle for octave-voiced guitar which suggests Carlos Santana playing George Benson, and "Se Formó El Bochinche", which is fired by a solid groove and powerful vocals from E.J. Rodriguez. The group's debut remains a tough act to follow, but the two records make a complementary pair. --Mark Gilbert
