Singer and accordionist Chenier was the undisputed king of zydeco, Louisiana's black cousin to Cajun music. The owner of Montreal's Rising Sun Club, Roue Doudou Boicel, recorded this 1978 show, which was part of a week-long residency. The two-track reel-to-reel tape quality is understandably not that high, the various instruments sometimes enjoying an uneven balance. This isn't the right album to buy as an introduction to Chenier but its overall ramshackle party feel justifies it as part of any Clifton connoisseur's collection. As usual, he was working with the long-serving Red Hot Louisiana Band, featuring older brother Cleveland on rubboard (it's normally a corrugated clothes-washing tool, but here it's percussively attacked by his thimbled fingers). The initial run of tunes has a very slow, blues-grinding feel, the band chewing over their sound, building up a sensuous groove. Blind John Hart's tenor saxophone sounds uncertain, and it's too high in the mix, while Chenier's accordion is often too low. After "Rock Me Baby", "Bon Ton Roulet" and "Tu M'as Promis L'Amour", Clifton drops an unexpected "In The Mood" into the brew, shambling into "I'm A Hog For You Baby". The second half picks up the pace with knees-up versions of "Jole Blonde", "Zydeco Cha Cha" and "Whole Lotta Lovin'". --Martin Longley
