The Bach worship of the late-Romantic composer Max Reger largely took the form of voluminous writing for organ and a fondness for the fugue. But it arises in a more austere - and for some of us, more palatable - form in these seven sonatas for solo violin. Written in 1905, they draw on the textural resources established by Bach, in particular an elaborate repertoire of contrapuntal devices, and the resulting technical challenges are formidable. For the performer, that is - the listener, by contrast, is rewarded with a steady stream of shapely melody and rich harmonies. This recording, a remastered CD drawn from two LPs released in the 1990s, sounds bright and forward almost to a fault, and violinist Ulrike-Anima Mathé plays with a straight-backed rigor that is impressive but not always especially ingratiating - I'm convinced there's more charm in this music than she lets on.
