As the title suggests, the Wet Wet Wet's debut album is a mixture of luscious soul and 1980's formulaic pop. Produced by veteran soul producer Willie Mitchell, the album is an ambitious attempt to appeal to both the teen market and the more discerning soul buying public. Perhaps surprisingly, the palatable, crossover material on Popped In Souled Out proved successful. The hit singles "Sweet Little Mystery" and "Wishing I Was Lucky" are all uptempo pop songs, while "Temptation" and "Angel Eyes (Home And Away)" are harmonic ballads. "East Of the River", meanwhile appears to be the group's attempt to deal with their soul influences. --John Galilee
