Hij is met name bekend door zijn saxofoon-spel in Norman Granzs "Jazz at the Philhar-monic" van 1946 tot 1957. In de twintig jaar daarna nam hij slechts n lp op als leider, dus de ontdekking van deze tapes met gita-rist Dell Staton uit 1963 was een welkome verrassing.
