"Jelly Roll Morton - The Complete, 1/2" bietet mit 32 Tracks sämtliche Aufnahmen, die Morton zwischen 1926 und 1927 in Chicago einspielte. Die formbildende Struktur und Instrumentierung dieser Musik zählt zu den ihr am häufigsten zugesprochenen Attributen. Vernachlässigt wird dabei oft die Tatsache, daß Morton die Grundlagen für zukünftige Entwicklungen geschaffen hat. Sein erstes Meisterwerk "Black Bottom Stomp" (1936) klingt zum Beispiel wie ein Vorbote des Kansas-City-Swing. Anderes wieder ist so mitreißend wie der Hardbop der 50er Jahre.
