`Children of Adam, songs of creation' is een wereldpremiÞre en gecomponeerd in opdracht van het Richmond Symphony. Het wordt gecombineerd met `Dona nobis pacem' van Ralph Vaughan Williams. Beide stukken halen hun inspiratie uit de poÙzie van Walt Whitman (geb. 1819) . Bates heeft in iedere beweging een andere visie op de schepping en wisselt deze af met korte intermezzo's , waarvan de teksten afkomstig zijn van Amerikaanse dichters en Native Americans. De uitvoering is van het Richmond Symphony o.l.v. Steven Smith samen met het Richmond Symphony Chorus o.l.v. Erin R. Freeman.
