Long renowned as a Louisiana blues hub, Baton Rouge also spawned its share of 1960s soul luminaries. Bobby Powell may have shined the brightest of all. The sightless keyboardist emerged as the flagship artist on producer Lionel Whitfield's locally based Whit label, scoring a major R&B hit in late 1965 with a soul-soaked remake of the ancient blues 'C.C. Rider' and subsequently building a spectacular catalog that extended into the '70s. The soul-steeped 1964-1971 recordings of Bobby Powell were loaded with a spine-chilling spiritual enrichment that could only come from a singer and keyboardist born and bred in the church who summarily went secular. Bobby's sides for producer Lionel Whitfield's self-named Whit label included a major '65 hit, his remake of the immortal 'C.C. Rider,' as well as his '66 R&B charter 'Do Something For Yourself' and 1971's emotionally charged 'The Bells.'
