Heinrich Schiff: Complete Recordings On Philips and DG

The last quarter of the 20th Century witnessed the emergence of an exceptional number of gifted cellists but 'none finer than Austrian virtuoso Heinrich Schiff' (The Strad). As his career developed, Schiff turned increasingly to conducting, but following a serious stroke in 2008 and the debilitating pains that followed, he was forced to retire from public performing. At the height of his career as a cellist - as captured on this outstanding set of recordings - he was a true force of nature. Highlights include the benchmark recordings of Shostakovich's two cello concertos conducted by the composer's son Maxim, Haydn Concertos, Schubert's String Quintet with the Hagen Quartett, Gulda's Concerto for Cello & Wind Orchestra-written for Schiff-and a definitive account of Lutoslawki's multifaceted Cello Concerto conducted by the composer.
