Utopia: Chilled Classics is a real oddity, taking film music, ambient crossover tracks and a smattering of classical pieces and blending them into two-and-a-half hours of rather melancholy background music. Despite the title, only a quarter of the 35 pieces here could genuinely be described as classical, while the haunting John Williams theme from Schindler's List is as far from utopia as one could get. Actually the appeal of this collection is very much that of a modern version of the venerable MOR film-theme compilation, as even those cues which haven't yet been in a film appear as if they are just waiting to grace some elegant new art-house favourite. A collection of cues from artists of the Universal group of labels, the set spans Hans Zimmer's anthemic closing music from Gladiator, George Fenton's The Blue Planet title music to John Tavener's Song For Athene, made famous at the funeral of Princess Diana. Elsewhere are New Age/ambient tracks from Terry Oldfield, Pilgrimage, Secret Garden and Oceania, with Fauré's beautiful Pavane included as the "World Cup Theme 2000". Among the other classical pieces Mozart's "Adagio from Concerto in A" is offered in an electronic arrangement by ValGardena, while James Horner's Titanic theme is not from the soundtrack, but a version for solo harp by Patricia Spero. Best suited to background music for dinner parties, romantic evenings or simply relaxing, Utopia is likely to receive a more chilled reception from purists of various musical persuasions.--Gary S Dalkin
