Following the impressive success of Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, and Urge Overkill, the major labels descended on Chicago and scooped up several deserving younger bands, including Midwestern shoegazers Catherine. The quintet's first album, Sorry, is an enticing mix of swirling guitars, driving rhythms, and lilting vocal harmonies. Yes, they sound a bit like the Pumpkins, but bandleader Neil Jendon has a better sense of humor than his mentor Billy Corgan, as evidenced by the band's motto ("Better living through noise") and the album's killer cover of the Bee Gees' ditty, "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You." --Jim DeRogatis
