The occasion for this greatest-hits recording was Universal-International Pictures' Benny Goodman Story, for which Benny not only dubbed the "playing" of the actor who represented him (Steve Allen) but provided all the music. He thereby ensured far greater authenticity on the soundtrack than there ever was in the script, some of which was rather demeaning to the other musicians involved, both white and black. The assembled big-band contains several former Goodman sidepersons of various vintages, such as Gene Krupa, Teddy Wilson and the surprising choice of Stan Getz, plus other suitable players like Buck Clayton. The 14 tracks here (out of 21 on the original two LPs) also include briefer guest appearances from the likes of Lionel Hampton, Harry James and vocalist Martha Tilton while Benny's own playing, though less fiery than of old, is still more than acceptable. Less so is the remastering of the 1955 state-of-the-art recordings which now contain much distortion, thanks to "equalisation and computerised noise removal techniques" that have been applied in a totally unsatisfactory manner. --Brian Priestley
