I Can Feel the Waves

Brooklyn-born multimedia artist and forward-thinking musician Frances Chang is upsetting standards with her unique and haunting compositions. His songs explore the tension between personal experience of an idiosyncratic language and the need to understand (and be understood), through a collective language. In "I Can Feel the Waves", her new single and first track on RVNG Intl., a piano-centric melody is adorned with primitive electronics and a poetic voice. The song boldly demonstrates Chang's talent for writing that is both unconventional and catching, and ushers in a genre she describes as "slacker prog": ample and playful, offbeat and sometimes dissonant, overflowing with spiritual and emotional resonance. The B-side, "Marry", is a catchy and relaxed composition, with soft and fearless bass drum rhythms bubbling under piano textures until a dialogue, played between Chang and Sylvia Gorelick, takes center stage in the final moments of the track. While the instrumental continues its free pace, the conversation, inspired by films like Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret and Fat Girl! by Catherine Breillat, as well as Broken Social Scene's Anthems for a Seventeen-Year Old Girl, turns to the relationship between inner subjectivity and the external need to "remain discreet." Where is Frances taking us from now on? A piano is in the center, synthesizers and strings enveloping it. A little less tension, much more production. Shadows will be encountered, forgotten skeletons will be exhumed. Music excavated from the subtlest and deepest layers of brain and shared experiences. Music that is truly unique.
