Aretha Franklin wurde am 25. März 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee geboren. Durch ihren Vater, einen berühmten Baptistenprediger kam sie schon früh mit der Gospel-Musik in Berührung. 1956 veröffentlichte sie ein Gospelalbum gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater bei einer lokalen Plattenfirma.
Mit 18 Jahren bekam Aretha Franklin ihren ersten Plattenvertrag und veröffentlichte 1960 ihr erstes Album. Sie arbeitete als
Clubsängerin und veröffentlichte weitere Alben mit zunehmendem Erfolg.
1967 wechselte Aretha Franklin ihre Plattenfirma und schaffte gleich mit ihrer ersten Single den großen Durchbruch. Sie wurde als „First Lady of Soul“ und auch als „Queen of Soul“ zur Ikone der schwarzen Musik in den USA.
Aretha Franklin verstarb am 16. August 2018 im Alter von 76 Jahren an einer Krebserkrankung.
