Hairspray Live! is the soundtrack album to the upcoming television special that will air live on NBC TV in the USA on December 7, 2016.
This is a new adaptation of the 2002 musical, which won eight Tony Awards. There have been two film versions of Hairspray, the first in 1988 and the second in 2007.
Based on the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Broadway musical, Hairspray LIVE! takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” a local TV program. When against all odds Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy's mother is the indomitable Edna, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white “Corny Collins Show.”
The special will be directed by Kenny Leon (Tony Award-winning "A Raisin in the Sun," “The Wiz Live!,” "Fences") and Alex Rudzinski, with the script adaptation by the legendary Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein ("Kinky Boots," "Newsies," "Torch Song Trilogy," "La Cage aux Folles").
The television program is produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Oscar-winning duo behind “Chicago;” plus the “Hairspray” film, The Oscars, etc.), and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell (Tony-winner for “La Cage aux Folles” and also for “Kinky Boots”). Music and lyrics are by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Smash” and Broadway's upcoming “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”).
