De meedogenloze en machtige rancher Randall Bragg heeft erin toegestemd dat zijn bende outlaws flink huishouden in het mijnwerkersstadje Appaloosa. Wanneer daarbij marshal Jack Bell in koelen bloede wordt vermoord, huren de stadsbewoners Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch in om hen tegen Bragg en zijn bende outlaws te beschermen. Het wordt echter complex voor Cole en Hitch wanneer de weduwe Allison French in Appaloosa arriveert.
