Caspian Verne is destined for greatness: to join the ranks of powerful scholars who can walk through worlds, and fulfill his grandmother's ambitions. It's also a destiny he's determined to get out of, with the help of a god rumored to grant a powerful favor to those willing to pay the price. The only problem is that the god is missing.

When a ritual to track down the missing god goes awry, Caspian finds himself at the mercy of Mira, who has nothing to do with the scholars and yet possesses magical talents of her own. Desperate, he makes a bargain he has no intention of keeping: together, they will find the god and split the favor between them.
