Collection: Peter Gabriel
A musician, activist, and visionary, Peter Gabriel is a man who wears many hats. Since co-founding Genesis in 1967 whilst still at school, Gabriel has gone on to have success as a solo artist, most notably for his 1986 worldbeat-influenced album ‘So’ which propelled him from cult-hero to international superstar.
2023 saw Peter Gabriel release his first album of new original material in 21 years with ‘i/o’, then returning a mere three years later with its counterpart, ‘o\i’, marking the shortest gap between releases since the early 1980s.
A musician, activist, and visionary, Peter Gabriel is a man who wears many hats. Over sixty years since forming his first band, Garden Wall, with future Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks, Gabriel’s innovation and wide pool of influence are as apparent now as they were on Genesis’ sophomore record, ‘Trespass’. Through success with Genesis, Gabriel began testing himself musically before leaving the band in 1975 and setting sail on a solo career in 1977. Over the course of four self-titled works, he developed his sonic palette before the worldbeat-influenced ‘So’ propelled him from cult-hero to international superstar.
Alongside his musical success, Peter Gabriel co-founded WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) in 1980, opened the Real World Studios and label to facilitate the creation and distribution of such music, and became a pioneering participant in Amnesty International’s Human Rights Concerts series.
Moving into the 21st century, Gabriel released his first album in ten years with ‘Up’, which would be his last album of entirely original material for 21 years until returning in 2023 with ‘i/o’. Now, three years on, Gabriel is returning with its counterpart, ‘o\i’, marking the shortest gap between releases since the early-1980s.
