Over the centuries, humans have analysed our existence to such an extent that we no longer know, on a very fundamental level, how to be in the world. We strive to be masters of our own universe, controlling the world around us as we are taught, and wringing out all the value we can from it. But in so doing, we shut ourselves off from the animate force of the material world, from making and belonging to it, and our lives are immeasurably poorer as a result.

Many of us already hunger for this missing connection and seek ways to compensate. The pleasure millions get from crafts like pottery and knitting, the great sourdough craze of 2020, and the popularity of tv shows about how to mend things are just a few examples which bear witness to this phenomenon. As a sculptor, Juliette Bigley has come to appreciate the character of materials. Not just the brass, nickel and copper that she uses in her work, metals with distinct personalities.
